I didn't have a chance to write about this when it happened. So here it is now.
On Tuesday (I think—it could have been Monday...whatever) I was over using Layla's internet connection when I remembered about the Craigslist/Googlemaps widget that a PhD student threw together. It's sweet.
So, we started looking at local listings. In specific, we found a ton of three/four bedroom houses for rent...for surprisingly cheap. A 2000 ft2 house, for example, looked to be around $1500/month; that's not bad compared to $800/month apartments and is actually only slightly more expensive than something similar in Socorro.
So, Layla and I wandered out with a few addresses in hand. Since the streets around here are almost all numbered, it's pretty easy to find an arbitrary address.
We thought.
It turns out that there are a bunch of streets with identical names scattered around all over the place. We found a ton of 64th streets (at least three or four) and never actually even found the damned house we were looking for.
So, we dropped by her office and picked up her tablet. That worked out significantly better.
In the end, we found five houses. Only two were total dives. The remaining three were really nice. Here they are.
Well, I actually forgot to take pictures of the first place. It was really nice and the neighbor even came over and had a talk with us—he seemed like a damned cool guy. Unfortunately, the flyer does say, "no pets."
This place was also really nice, although the dark wood is admittedly pretty creepy.
Holy hell, this place was damned nice. $1900/month for a 3 bedroom, but it's in a really nice neighborhood and has hardwood floors throughout. Everything about this house was fantastic.
Of course, this is all a moot point—I don't know anyone in this town who is looking for a place to live immediately. Layla still has a few months on her lease and Manuel won't be out here for a bit still. And by the time everything may work out, all these houses will assuredly be off the market.
But whatever. Fun times!
