As part of my job, I'm forced to live with pieces of harware like the Motion Computing LE1600 slate portable PC. Oh yes, it's difficult work. Somebody has to do it.
Just so there's absolutely no confusion whatsoever: this thing is damned cool. Wow.
The one I've got comes completely decked out—it's got a solid gig of RAM and comes with the View Anywhere display, which provides nearly uniform illumination across the entire 180° viewing area. It's got the standard tablet-style inductive pointer interface, which means that although the screen isn't a touchpad (amen), it does react to the stylus. This is sweet in that you can rest you palm against the screen and it won't pick any of it up.
So far, I've just been dicking around with the software trying to exercise as much functionality as I can. Impressive. For the money, you really can't get anything better for nutzing around on the web and reading email(s).
The only real problem so far is that the detachable keyboard (which works as a stand, so it'll sit upright like a normal laptop) isn't terribly well-suited to hacking around with code while, say, in the middle of a meeting. Maybe it's just that I haven't really figured it out yet—but I think the root of the problem is that the screen isn't cemented to the keyboard. It gets a bit wobbly.
Overall, it's way, way hot. Well worth the money. If I actually spent much time outside the apartment and office (which these days, has been difficult), I'd buy one without a second thought. Right now, the only thing that keeps me from buying one right this second is that I'd gladly sink money like that into ... you know, a car. Or more flight time. Or a camera.
Plus, I've got the loaner unit for a while longer. Hot.
