Fujitsu LifeBook P1500D

| | Comments (10)

In the same vein as nearly every other technology purchase I consider, I'm going to talk a bit today about some cool new piece of hardware, elicit comments and suggestions, and then sit on the idea for a while. The subject, in this case, is the Fujitsu P1500D convertible tablet.

I've tried two different tablets from work now—the Motion LE1600, which is a fantastic piece of hardware if you can get around the lack of a keyboard (which I can't, unfortunately); and the HP tc4200, which is a surprisingly good convertible, but probably not exactly what I'm looking for long-term. Now, I happened across the Fujitsu P1500D a while back, and it looks like a terribly sweet (and cheap!) toy.

The only thing about the P1500D is that I haven't actually, you know, gotten a chance to play with one yet. Laptops are very very tactile objects and I think it's critical to actually get to handle one before tossing down some benjamins'. So, I have to figure that one out.

But nevertheless, here's why I dig on the P1500D:

  • It's small. Really small. Just look at the pictures.
  • It's cheap. You can get one almost completely decked out for $1500. Add in another hundred or two for a cool gig (which the P1500D supports, but isn't an option) of Micro-DIMM (whatever that is) and you're in business.
  • It's a tablet. In this case, it's got a passive digitizer, which means it works sortof like an old Palm Pilot: you can use anything to tap on the screen. I actually like the active (i.e., inductive) digitizers more...but hey.
  • It says it'll do 7 hours with a phatty battery. Awesome.

Any thoughts? Can you think of anything even cooler?

I was going to make the comment that you can't get it with 1 gig, but since I was wrong, it is pretty neat.

I don't know if I can check one out for you, but if you want to come by my office, I bet Jim would show you his.

I've been in the market for a new laptop and previously haven't thought of this notebook. I've actually been looking for a notebook where I don't have to use a specific pen to touch the screen with.
What do you think of the IBM thinkpad X41?

Dunno about the X41—I've never actually handled one. If it's anything like Lenovo's other notebooks, though, it's probably overpriced, a bit underpowered, but absolutely superbly built. Lenovo got all the good stuff from the chassis designers when they bought the Thinkpad division, and the old Thinkpads were absolutely rock-solid.

Oh yes and Layla: I'll take you up on that offer to bug Jim about his tablet. You and I will have to, um, meet up sometime.

Will: Actually, you may want to hold off on that X41 for just a moment. Lenovo announced yesterday that all their new laptops are getting 3G broadband access. This is cool enough that it may be worth waiting for.

Yeah, with the RSX comments you made. Well to say the least you probably want to remove them. 1) The Type S logo isnt on incorrect 2) The wing is actually a original Acura ASPEC spoiler and the rims are Type S rims, not the base rims. Just thought you should know and maybe you should stop by a Acura dealership to do your homwork.

Thanks

Jamie-

1) The Type-S looks incorrectly placed—it's too far to the right. Consider this screenshot from the Acura website, which shows the "Type-S" much closer to the "RSX."

2) I stand corrected on the wing—when I went and spec'd out an RSX in 2002, it wasn't an option.

2b) I really do think those rims were only available on the base model. I thought the only rims on the Type-S were a good deal more retarded.

And no, I'm not going to remove the post.

Thanks

Also, the previous conversation relates to this post about a picture of an Acura RSX.

You still have no idea what the hell your talking about so go on making up absolutly crap.

If you've got a point to make, make it. Your comments about "absolutly crap" are meaningless without an indication of what the hell you're discussing.
