The missing link in fixing the Mercedes: adjusting the float valves

| | Comments (0)

After not really doing much with the Mercedes for around a month or so (I've been busy), I asked around a bit and the simplest response I found was: check your float valves. They may be set incorrectly.

It had never occured to me to actually check the position of the float valves.

The thing is that I've got them spaced out as far as they'll go (so they should shut off fuel when the float is in a really low position) but I'm still seeing fuel on top of the butterfly valves after the engine dies. Have I not got enough shimming in there? Does anyone who's actually troubleshot (?) a carb know whether or not you're supposed to have fuel on the back end?

I'd normally think no, but I'm fairly sure that I've been splashing a bit of fuel on there when I gas it to get it started—the accelerator pumps do actually work.

Update: no, the picture isn't a toilet tank.
