I've mentioned the "Hobby du Jour" before—and hopefully this isn't another hobby in which I lose interest after a month or two: I've signed up at the local Aikido dojo.
So I've actually been thinking about this for the better part of two years. I've wanted to study some sort of martial art since I started school, and now that I'm out of Socorro, I feel like I've actually got the time and the access to schools to actually do so.
I chose Aikido primarily because of the fluidity of the art. I've never been all that keen on the more directed martial arts (karate, for example) and the more I looked into Aikido, the more I liked it. I called up the local dojo and the instructor there, Lee Crawford, told me to drop by to watch a lesson. I watched a basic class do weapons training (which is fairly rare—generally all classes are hand-to-hand) and I'm hooked.
Tomorrow night is my first night at the dojo. I'm getting two lessons and a gi for $20 (which isn't at all unreasonable) and the fees go up to $90/month thereafter. And there we go. Wish me luck.
