I've mentioned already the first challenge in the Torx-riddled gauntlet that BMW assembled to thwart mechanics questing to remove ye olde transmission from the engine. The guide I'm using mentioned that I would need about a half-dozen different ratchet parts to remove these, but in the end, I was able to crack the two Torx heads with just:
- The Torx socket,
- a 12" 3/8 extension
- another 12" 3/8 extension
- a 4" 3/8 extension
- another 4" 3/8 extension
- a 1/2 to 3/8 converter
- and finally, a 1/2 drive breaker bar.
So, that was pleasant. But at least I didn't have to use a universal joint, which generally suck to actually break bolts loose.
The problem is that even after breaking these bolts loose, one of them actually has a [expletive deleted] nut on the other side, instead of threading directly into the engine block.
And to get to that nut, I had to take the [expletive deleted] intake manifold off. Which, in turn, required taking the fuel rail out, which required taking the heater cover off, which required taking the upper rain shield off, which required taking the wiper blades off.
[expletive deleted] you, BMW.
