Federal officials on Friday wound up an onsite investigation of a Wednesday's crash that killed Lidle and Tyler Stanger, a 26-year-old [driving] instructor from California. The FAA said a review of operations and procedures in the East River corridor prompted the rule change, which will require [drivers] of small [automobiles] to obtain approval from [traffic cops] before entering the area.
The FAA said the [driving] restrictions go into effect immediately.
The [streets] around Manhattan have been “the Wild West,” said Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y earlier Friday. He and Sen. Charles Schumer said anyone [driving] near the island should be under the supervision of [traffic cops], especially in the post-[Oklahoma city bombing] era.
“A smart terrorist could load up a small, little [Ryder truck] with biological, chemical or even nuclear material and [drive along] the Hudson or East rivers, no questions asked,” said Schumer, D-N.Y. “I hope this will be a wake-up call to the FAA to re-examine [traffic] patterns, which, amazingly enough, they haven’t done since [the truck bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993].”
New York’s Republican governor, George Pataki, also said the Federal Aviation Administration “needs to take a much tougher line” about private [drives through] the city.
Lidle’s [Toyota hatchback] slammed into the building Wednesday while [driving along] the East River, which separates Manhattan from Brooklyn and Queens and is lined with skyscrapers and landmarks, including the United Nations. He and California-based [driving] instructor, Tyler Stanger, were killed.
My sincerest condolences to the friends and families of the victims. But to those of you pretending that this is a sign of lax aviation traffic control policies instead of a simple accident involving an errant vehicle—shame on you. You should know better.
