Thanks BMW, but you still suck

In their wisdom, BMW has opted for Torx heads instead of nearly universally standard hexagonal heads for the bolts which hold their transmissions to their M50 series engines. I originally complained about this, but in reality, it's a huge bonus since Torx heads are nearly impossible to round. When they do finally let go, the splines simply separate from the bolt shaft—and if you've reached that point, well, it's about time to buy some screw extractors.

And I'm pleased to report that the heads to, in fact, work—I've been able to put far more torque through these bolts than I could ever with standard hex heads.

But while the Torx heads are a nice bonus, the placement of them certainly isn't. BMW chose to bind the engine and bellhousing together with 14 stinking bolts, two of which are almost completely inaccessible at the very top of the housing (see picture at top of article). Earlier today I managed to crack six of the easiest ones off, but that means I've still got eight left, including the two legendary bolts.

Wayne over at Pelican Parts (who has lovingly assembled all the retarded crap you need to know to make this happen) notes that

In order to remove this top bolt, I used the following tool combination: 3/8 Torx socket, 3/8 1-ft extension, 3/8 extension u-joint, 3/8 3-ft extension, 3/8 to 1/2 adapter, 3-ft 1/2 breaker bar.

Fantastic. I realize every auto manufacturer needs to keep their transmissions and engines attached with whole piles of bolts but that doesn't change how annoyed I am. BMW, suck it.
