It's brain cactus!

This is a picture of the top of a Saguaro cactus near Layla's mom's place in Tucson. But instead of the usual load of arms (and other, ahem naughty bits of anatomical suggestion), this cactus is topped off with a wonderfully swirly brain-looking thing. It's not too clear in the thumbnail, but it's well worth blowing the shot up to take a closer look.

It's called crowning; it's a common mutation in cacti in general. If you walk around the UA campus you'll see a couple other spectacular examples of it. My host last time I was in Tucson explained all about these things, it was very interesting.

Wow, that's pretty damned cool. Too bad "crowning" is such a gross word.
