When negotiations go bad

So in, uhh, response to my last post about buying a house, I'd like to say that the tactics I outlined don't always work.

It turns out that despite the comparably very poor condition of the property in question, the seller had absolutely no intention on budging on repairs, concessions, or the purchase price. He flat-out rejected our proposal and after my agent was finally able to get ahold of his agent, we figured out what's up.

This is one of ten properties this guy holds in the area—and he's owned all of them since the mid 1970s. His mortgages are assuredly ridiculously small (if not completely paid off) so he's more than happy to sit a few months on the property to eek out a few thousand bucks.

This totally sucks for us, since we're offering to make the deal right this moment if only he'll knock five figures off the asking price. Oops.

So ... back to the hunt it is. We haven't officially terminated the sale on the current property, but we already looked at five other homes tonight to make sure we're making the right decision—and from what we've seen, we're doing the right thing.
