There you are, you damned utility knife box cutter

A while back, I bought a generic utility knife. It looks an awful lot like the one pictured at right. Yes, I scanned through a bunch of images of utility knives on the web before settling on that picture.

The thing is that I lost this utility knife right the day after we moved, which is convenient in that I've really needed it these last few weeks. Layla can attest to how often I've asked, "have you seen my utility knife?" Most of the time, she'd answer, "it's over there," and then I'd say, "no, that's a multi-tool," and finally she'd ask, "oh, are you looking for your box cutter?" and I'd finished with, "no, I'm looking for my utility knife."

Which brings me to my point: is this a utility knife or a box cutter? Web searches for both names appear to yield approximately similar results. I suppose this is sortof like asking if you call carbonated sugar drinks soda or Coke. I guess there's really no wrong answer—unless, of course, you call it pop.

Box cutters use straight razors one at a time. Utility knives use trapezoid blades and usually store a few extras in the handle. You've got a utility knife.
Box (although the image is tagged as a "casecutter" cutter = http://stlbrianj.blogspot.com/gfx/casecutter.jpg

At least that's my understanding from being a bag boy (long ago) and now in the print industry.

Ah-ha! Thanks for the info!

Wait, aren't only "box cutters" prohibited on airliners? Does that mean that you could bring this explanation, along with your utility knife, to the airport and get on board?

Hijackers recently smuggled an entire boxload of box cutters onto an airplane and, using the logic you mentioned, were also able to smuggle a utility knife on board.

Thankfully, they were unable to rationalize opening a box with a general-purpose non-box-cutter utility knife, and had no box cutters with which to hijack the airplane.

Go USA!

my brother once stole a "box cutter" from walmart. you should have seen the face of theguy looking for his missing "box cutter." Word on the street is def "utility knife" though.

Peace bro.
