We've got bamboo in our backyard. Thankfully, it's not the weedy kind—it's more like a giant bush, and it's (reportedly) not likely to spread very much, or very quickly.
But about six feet away from the base of the bush was a nice spot where I wanted to plant a new Asian pear tree we picked up today—and in that spot was another small sprout of bamboo, clearly trimmed down to a nub by the previous owner.
I managed to get the shoots out of the ground after two or three minutes of digging, but pulled up nearly six feet of root along with it. Here it is, sitting next to our compost bin. There are more root bits that got chopped off before it all got taken to the trash.
It's a bamboo snake.
