Someone please let me know if I'm missing some huge advacement in consumer power technology, but it seems that the electrical juice we're receiving today is being processed in exactly the same way it was 20 years ago. After the widespread introduction of switching power supplies, I can't think of any major change in this whole damned field.
I think the only difference between how I plug stuff in now versus how I plugged stuff in then is the introduction of the powersquid and those wallwart-space-saving 6" extension cords—and that's it.
Come on, people. I demand in-home propane taps to refuel my microturbine fuel cell, and contact-free power delivery I keep hearing is "right around the corner." And flying cars.
Oh, and the picture: it's a clever concept on modular computing that illustrates how little we've done with the good old power plug.
