It's approximately 7:30 on a Monday evening. On three consecutive network channels, we've got Inside Edition, The Insider, and Access Hollywood. All three are celebrity gossip shows.

CSI:Miami in 1080i perhaps :-)
Although :Miami is my least favourite, the other shows and especially the PBS channels are totally worth it for me.
I own an HD TV and have for three years. For the reasons you specify I do not have any method for displaying HD content.

Somebody needs a Tivo!
That's actually ... a really good point.
I've always written off something like a TiVo (or a PC-based DVR) because we don't get cable—but it actually makes sense in this case. Definitely something to consider.
