Layla and I went to Leavenworth for Oktoberfest this weekend. What the heck?
Leavenworth is an odd little town. You can read this on the Wikipedia link, but essentially Leavenworth was originally a timber town founded in the early 1900s but lost momentum when the railroad relocated to nearby Wenatchee. A revitalization effort in the 1960s remodeled the entire town after a Bavarian village.
The end result is lots of beer, breaded meats, and cabbage. Oktoberfest is a lot of fun (beer!) but other than that, I'm not sure I get it.
That said, the scenery is fantastic: Leavenworth is nestled between fantastic craggy mountains and sits next to the Wenatchee river. Very pretty.

You've just spent 16+ hours a day, 7 days a week for the past 6+ weeks working in your fields harvesting. Now that the harvest is done: drink, food and song.
Most of us don't really do the fields/harvest thing anymore, but history says it's time for drink, food and song, so bring it on. :)
True. I see the deal with festivals—this makes sense.
I love Leavenworth because things it's tiny, everyone knows everyone, and things move slowly there. It's a great place to just get away, drink some beer and eat some waffles. Plus, it is a nice drive.
Yeah, but Socorro is all of those things too, and I'm not really keen on going there to get away.
Agreed—the drive is totally stellar.
