The disappearing car door

| | Comments (4)

I saw this earlier today at Jalopnik—it's a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII heavily modified to feature the coolest doors this side of Countach. Or this side of Z1, for you car nerds out there...or anyone who's seen Armour of God II: Operation Condor: Jackie Chan's most hot-doggin' movie. I realize I'm off-topic by now. On to the video.

It turns out the manufacturer has put together a website at the creatively named disappearing-car-door.com. And, they've got an interesting overview video that plays automatically if you go there.

Innovation! In a Mark VIII!

Did I break comments again?

No, it appears I didn't.

I would miss the window buttons, and arm rest. Did you watch the video on their webpage? All the cars they show this on are MK8s, and for some reason they only get out of the car in mansions.

I think they've solved the armrest problem with swanky captain's-chair-style swinging armrests. And the window switches aren't a problem—my 3 has the switches on the center console, and it's really easy to get used to them.

Apparently FoMoCo asked these guys to modify a Mark VIII back in the mid-1990s, which is why that's the only featured car.

And the use of mansions unfortunately only highlights the biggest problem with this car—crack dealers, mafiosos, and crooked bookies who use their car doors to incapacitate those who owe them. I mean really, after you've beaten someone senseless on the curb, how would you smack them on the head with the car door as you drive away?
