The thing about snowboarding is that it's easy to rack up 3000 dietary calories of exercise while hitting the slopes for a few hours. My heart rate monitor indicated 2500 calories today, and I didn't take things as roughly as I have been lately.
So at the end of the day, I don't ever feel too bad snarfing down a burger or sandwich on the way home. And if I'm coming home from Stevens Pass, I've got three great ways to get the very best of American cooking.
- The Sultan Bakery in ... Sultan is a fantastic little shop that books gazillions of donuts, breads, and desserts—and a bunch of other stuff, too. I recommend the breakfast sandwich during breakfast, which really is a sandwich. They also make a mean turkey, bacon, swiss on that freshly baked bread.
- Zeke's is actually closer to the pass (just East of Gold Bar), but I list it second here because that's the order in which I found it. Zeke's is about exactly what you'd expect if you imagine a "great American burger joint." I forget what I got here the one time I've been, but it was tasty. Zeke's is easy to miss if you don't know where it is, so be on the lookout.
- Old School BBQ consists of two gutted school buses parked by the side of the road (next to the reptile zoo!) in Monroe and serves up authentic Texas-style BBQ—in fact, Rob and I learned today that they even import mesquite wood to get the right flavor for the meats. I had a brisket sandwich which was quite awesome, and Rob had a pork sandwich which was reportedly also awesome. Unlike Zeke's, Old School BBQ isn't at all difficult to find since their kitchen is a yellow school bus parked right next to the highway (and reptile zoo).
Great stuff. But beware if you haven't burned a few thousand calories on the slopes first.

Thanks for the relink on the heart rate monitor. I just ordered one myself. Have you worn it throughout a day of slothful programming and seen what it gives you as a base calorie burn rate?
Nah, but that's not a bad idea. I'm not really sure how accurate it is when I'm resting—when I'm active, it's within 10% or so (I ran an Excel spreadsheet for a few weeks tracking my weight loss).
My expectation is that I burn through about 1000 calories in an 8-hour day, even if an 8-hour day is a welcome alternative right now.

Everything out here is greasy. Flavor is optional at some places, or not available at all. Now that we are in daylight savings time, I am working on shaving some pounds myself, so if you have any workout plans or tips, let me know.
Run. Lots.
LOL at Justin trying to run.
I actually can run now. Whenever I moved out here that became one of my goals, and now my knees can take the impact, which is a first since highschool football.
Like, this kind of football?
