I heard a report on the news earlier today about a mayday call received by the Coast Guard somewhere off the Washington seafront. The Coast Guard went to investigate and couldn't find it, which brought them to the obvious conclusion: the call was a prank.
I realize there are assuredly other factors in play here (sinking ships leave behind sailors and floating junk, right?) but perhaps the first assumption when unable to find a sinking boat should be that it sank?
