I mentioned earlier that I keep running across the same sets of broken items on old cars. This weekend's project involved fixing the door latches on the 914.
The excitement involved:
- Ripping apart both door cards twice. Clearly I missed the part about reassembling them properly the first time.
- Removing and cleaning out both latches. 34 years of grease and dust made both latches really gummy. These things were disasters and I'm surprised I didn't break the door handles before I cleaned the latches out.
- Bending the driver's side lock mechanism back into shape. So it, you know, works.
- Fitting a new passenger-side plastic lacth slide. These break all the time, I hear.
- Rebuilding the trunk lock. The trunk lock on the 914 is pretty straightforward: there's a tumbler with a pin sticking out the back, and a big latch that holds the trunk closed. Pushing in the tumbler pushes the pin against the latch release. Unfortunately, the pin on this tumbler broke and it appears that instead of finding a replacement, a previous owner drove a sheetmetal screw through the back of the tumbler, seizing it in the "unlocked" position. Some 8-32 tap action, a proper machine screw, and the Dremel brought it back into working condition.
The net effect is that I've gone from 3 mostly not-working locking assemblies (lock doesn't do anything; handle doesn't work; trunk lock can't turn) to 3 functioning ones.
Next weekend is valve lash adjustment, once my replacement valve cover gaskets arrive.

My dad's 914 handles are iffy at best. Did you use a DIY? Link?
"Iffy" would be an improvement. The door handles on the 914 are downright tragic.
I flipped through this article when I first looked at buying the car, but ultimately just pulled the whole thing apart without any instructions. That would probably explain why I reassembled the door cards without hooking them into the hanger notches along the top of the door.

You be sure to give them valves a good lashing. Be sure to bolt valve covers back on before cranking.
You jest, but I'm pretty sure the valve covers on this car are not affixed with any bolts.
