It appears the onset of summer heat has killed my cable connection. The cable modem appears to have survived, but it looks like the heat has affected the cable enough to make my already questionable signal completely unacceptable.
On the odd occasion that I'm actually getting a signal, my modem reports that it's having to push 58dBmV upstream. This is reportedly right at the limit of what's allowable for DOCSIS connections, and is a clear indicator that my connection is craptastic. A lower number would indicate the modem can get an acceptable signal without all the power.
So a tech is coming out tomorrow morning to take a look and hopefully he'll find the problem.
