I listened to an interview with Richard Preston last night on KUOW. Preston wrote The Hot Zone over a decade ago, and he's just published a new book, Panic in Level 4, which is based on a bunch of essays he wrote for the New Yorker.
I admit that I haven't read any of Preston's works, but his interview was fascinating. Listen to the whole hour here (MP3) as he talks about Ebola, black swans, autocannibalism, and a bunch of other stuff that's both "gruesome and fascinating."
