Even though the engine on the Porsche is covered by a mere sliver of a hood, it's actually pretty easy to work on. The flat engine layout makes it really easy to get at practically everything on top of the cylinders, and the low and long trunk does wonders for leaning over the engine bay.
On cars with more traditional engine layouts, I typically have to cantilever myself out over the engine with minimal support from the fenders or the front bumper. No more sore backs from working on cars now that I've got the Porsche. Plus, there's no steering gear to get in my way from below.
This contrasts with my expectation that mid-engined cars are nightmares to service.
Now if only the damned thing weren't built like a go-kart, I'd be just dandy. I can't even get my head underneath the car at stock ride height.

I agree with the no more sore backs, especially since the only engine access I have is from underneith.
Can you do anything besides replace the spark plugs without pulling the engine?
