1 in 3

| | Comments (12)
I heard earlier tonight (in a taped discussion on legal discovery of electronic documents) that as many as 67% of emails go unprinted. If true, that means that at least 1 out of every 3 emails is printed. Who the hell prints email?...

So sad

| | Comments (9)
Techies click here and scroll down to #8. That's right, New Mexico Tech is one of the top 10 schools with the saddest students. Amusing quotes: Hometown Socorro offers "absolutely nothing to do" and When you walk by people in the cafeteria, they're talking about algorithms. That's not a joke....

This man is British

| | Comments (2)
Those of you who watch The Wire may be a little shocked when this guy opens his mouth and sounds nothing like a drug dealer from West Baltimore. Amazing actor. P.S. If you haven't already, watch this show....

Someone explain this ad

| | Comments (8)
Ignoring the choppy English in the header (would "Has a hacker stolen your identity?" have been too difficult?) I'm nevertheless baffled by the choice of stock photography. Who is this guy, employed by a Red Lobster and holding a guitar? Is he supposed to be some sort of surfer-guy-looking hacker...

Clutch cable photo

| | Comments (0)
In celebration of the first day driving the Porsche without a dragging clutch, here is a photo of the clutch assembly, found right around where the passenger-side axle bolts into the transmission. For those of you who don't follow the minutiae of the 914, that's all under the trunk. This...

M7 nuts

| | Comments (0)
Apparently a mechanic who serviced the 914 long ago thought that a nylon-backed nut would be a sufficient means of securing the adjustment of the clutch on the threaded end of the clutch cable. Wrong. So to fix this, I had to search all over the eastern Puget Sound to...

Still working out the kinks

| | Comments (0)
As you've noticed, there are some problems. Those of you with my email address can mail me if anything has gone horribly awry with the comments or anything. Stuff still broken includes:All old entry archives (about 25% right now) RSS feed A bunch of the comment post-processing stuff, although it...

What happened?

| | Comments (2)
In an attempt to fix the search functionality (hint: it works) I accidentally flattened my theme. Enjoy. P.S. Read my last post, since it's got actual content for the day. P.P.S Please hold tight while the archives are rebuilt. It'll be a few ... hours?...
This article was featured on the front page of msn.com earlier. I'm not sure I agree with what's in it (I didn't read it carefully) but here's my take on GPAs and resumes: don't ever put your GPA on there. Four reasons for this. You're wasting a whole line. Space is...

Beads

| | Comments (7)
I had a long post planned explaining why I don't understand the bead industry—but screw it. How the hell do bead shops (yes, shops that specialize in selling ... beads) stay afloat? Baffling....

Snap

| | Comments (0)
One of the best parts of this story about two ruthless Washington-based outlaws hell-bent on pillaging and nap time is that the officers who caught the lads snoozing after their latest caper managed to snap a photograph before throwing on the cuffs....

Socorro in the news

| | Comments (2)
All Things Considered, a national public radio show, ran a story earlier today on the policital mood in New Mexico and, specifically, in Socorro. The story describes El Camino as, "a popular breakfast spot," and highlights why one Republican resident will be voting for McCain, even though he is very...

Satisfying to both parties

| | Comments (2)
The phrase, "I pay your salary" being shouted back to the cop as he tightens the handcuffs has got to be therapeutic for both people involved....

/dev/null sing-along blog

| | Comments (0)
...on second thought, I'll spare you my sing-along. But check out Dr. Horrible's, until it gets pulled off the web Sunday night. Great stuff....

Used commuter bikes

| | Comments (2)
I'm finding that used commuter bikes constitute an awfully rough market. 90% of the bikes posted for sale in the first place are either race bikes, mountain bikes, or for kids—and of the remaining 10%, all of the sub-$500 items are snapped up long before I find the ads....
I'm often amused by people in positions of service (cashiers, bus drivers, etc.) get really bothered and tell someone off. It is, admittedly, a little less amusing when I'm the one being told off1. I always enjoy things a little more when people are polite—but seeing someone exercise their freedom...

Advance screening

| | Comments (0)
Apparently I'm going to an advance screening of ... some film tomorrow. What's being released soon? Oh right, that Bat-man flick....

I'm the jealous jockey!

I have to admit that the Simpsons already did this one. But, nevertheless props to The Superest....

Dammit

Damn damn $99 leading edge....

Stupidity in retail

| | Comments (7)
I heard two things today that made me question the quickness of those behind the counter.A 3-minute-long discussion about how the store clerks have to fast-forward whenever Rage Against the Machine comes on the background music player, since it upsets some customers. "I don't get your shirt." See image at...

Eraser drift

| | Comments (0)
Those of you who have used a laptop with a pointing stick have probably noticed that occasionally, the cursor will (infuriatingly) drift in a direction you're not pushing the stick. It turns out that these pointers correct their own drift, but only if you take your finger off the stick....
I just ran across this picture and have no idea why the hell I took it, just about 10 years ago. I believe there's some special strata of cool reserved solely for people who drive orange cars while in high school....

Jenga pt. 2

| | Comments (2)
I'll spare you the story of how I figured this out: I had an additional vacuum leak and a maladjusted idle on the 914. The two were counteracting each other. When I fixed the leak, the idle made the car run like crap. More Jenga complimentary failure modes....

Sorry Mr. Woodpecker

| | Comments (4)
That bear sure is giving the business to the tree....

Trifecta of awesome

| | Comments (3)
Handicapped placard Big stupid dubs 22" in shiny stones on the fender Spotted near yesterday's fishes....

Hungry hungry fishes

| | Comments (2)
I took this picture earlier today at the lake at Wild Waves and Enchanted Village in lovely Federal Way. The fish have apparently figured out the most effective way to beg for duck food, dispensed in handfuls for $0.25 in big gumball-looking machines mounted along the lakeside. Creepy....

Slotted socket solution

| | Comments (3)
Raven recommended I just tuck the sensor pigtail inside a deep-well socket instead of working around it in solving my sensor removal conundrum, but apparently deep-well sockets in his part of the world are deeper than they are here. I couldn't get the line folded into the socket at all...

Can-Am Pizza

| | Comments (0)
Layla threw a party for her MBA teammates today and one of them (and his family) brought pizza from Can-Am, a local pizza joint. It turns out that Can-Am, which features Canadian and American flags on its boxes (hence the Can-Am) serves particularly awesome Indian pizzas. Butter chicken pizza? Hot....

Toby Keith for president

Having lived in Washington for 3 years, I have to admit I'm caught off-guard when I hear country music on Independence Day. Awesome....
Old automobiles are wonderful things. Among the grime and rust are decades-old examples of engineering and craftsmanship, and even though they've got a gizillion little parts, odds are pretty good that nearly everything on the car still largely functions, to some degree. Sure, the window regulators may be a little...
I'm pleased the plates finally came in. And yes, the state of Washington issues vanity plates without raised letters. They're simply printed on the blank....

Slotted sockets

| | Comments (5)
One of the items I should probably replace in getting the 914 running again is a small temperature sensor wired into the cylinder head. Said sensor has a ~6" pigtail connector hanging off of it, much like an O2 sensor. The thing is that even if I had a slotted...
