Transmission replacement: day 2

| | Comments (0)

The easiest tasks for today were the ones that were the most difficult yesterday. It only took about 30 minutes to back the transmission off the block, properly align the holes in the flex plate with the bolts in the torque converter, and bolt everything back down.

I was also dreading fitting the rear crossmember into place since I tried it once yesterday and had a hell of a time actually getting it to squeeze between the frame rails. But apparently I was just rockin' the stupid yesterday since I was able to get it all bolted together in 10 minutes earlier today.

In fact, practically everything went together smoothly ... until I popped the needle bearings out of one of my u-joint yokes. So I'll be putting that back together sometime soon.

Oh, and the photograph: apparently I smashed the living #@$% out of my kickdown linkage while removing the old transmission from the truck—you can see the big smash in the middle of what should otherwise be a round linkage. Anyway, the new transmission came with a new linkage, so I switched over to that one and made sure not to smash it while installing everything. So far, so good.
