This is the Mazda 787B racecar, which won LeMans in 1991. It's the only rotary-powered car to ever win at LeMans, and that win got rotary engines promptly banned the following year.
Even among rotaries it's notable: it has a four-rotor engine, which was once thought infeasible due to the incredible stress placed on the eccentric shaft, which is the rotary equivalent of a crankshaft.
Also notable are the 787B's 40cm-wide rear tires, which are just a hair wider than the tires on my 914.
