I'm removing the gas tank on the 914 so I can fix up the heater blower motors and replace any rotted-through gas lines, as it smells like there's a very small leak somewhere under the tank.
This requires that I run the tank nearly dry so I can lift it out of the hood. For the last two weeks I've carried around a gas can filled with 2/3 of a gallon of fuel, and have just run the tank down to the very bottom.
I was headed to get take-out Thai food earlier and was sitting at a stop light in busy traffic when I considered how bad it would be for the engine to die in the middle of this particular intersection, even though the gauge read a little less than 1/8 tank. It turns out I had enough fuel to make it the remaining 1/4 mile to the Thai place where the engine died right as I pulled into the parking lot. Running out of fuel in a convenient spot is a huge game of chance.
Anyway I made it home on the fuel from the gas can, and pulled apart the gravel shield and fuel tank—the former was held on by the bolt in the photo, which is the shortest trim bolt I've seen in a long time.
