I had the immense pleasure of visiting the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection at the Weyerhaeuser headquaters down in Federal Way this last weekend. One of my colleagues recommended this collection after he saw my struggling little tree in my office a few weeks ago, and I happened to have some spare time on Saturday, so I made the trip and spent some time staring at the dozens of trees on exhibit.
The collection is absolutely phenomenal and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves trees or art.
...and that's the difficulty, since it turns out that the collection will be closing indefinitely (PDF) at the end of this month due to economic conditions. The trees will thankfully be preserved during the downturn—hopefully (but not necessarily) in anticipation of a reopening.
I feel lucky to have caught the collection before it closed. It's quite a treasure.
P.S. The collection is right next door to the remarkable Weyerhaeuser building, which I'm sure will be the topic of a future post.
