Española Sikhs

Despite living less than 20 miles away for nearly a decade, I had no idea that Española was home to the largest community of mixed-race Sikhs in the entire world. This story by NPR describes them and Akal Security, a decently large security company they run.

Up until now I considered Española's chart-topping rate of heroin addiction to be one of its most notable facets. I'm glad to see there's something else to stand in its place.

Yeah a bunch of them come up and play Ultimate with us in Los Alamos. Odd folk.

Akal Security.

Those were the guys who lost their contracts to run security for the Albuquerque concerts because they would often hit kids heads against a concrete wall to get them to "Calm down". I personally stopped going to any concert they were protecting for that reason. I wrote letters too, but never heard anything back.

Indeed. I knew one in high school but didn't realize they had a whole community down there.

Yowch. Not that this condones that behavior, but I can't think of too many jobs crappier than running security at youth events in New Mexico. There's no way to win at that one.

I actually used to know 5 people who worked for Akal...none of them actually Sihks, but the owners are. They guys I knew mostly worked patrol and were armed...wouldn't have wanted any of them upset.

As for Espanola, I think it is considered a holy place for the Sikhs. They come from all over.

I went to Sombrio Elementry School, right around the corner of the big temple thing they had - shit was out of control.

As a side note Espanola is also well known for weaving and low riders.
