On traffic capacity

When we first moved to Kirkland, I lamented the then-recently-started construction on I-405 just east of our townhouse. "This is going to go on all year," I mentioned to Layla, "and I'm sure we're going to move out right before it's completed." Well, the construction took all year and we...

The crooked staircase

| | Comments (0)
Now that we're getting close to moving out of our apartment (likely in the next month or so), I figured I'd finally post a picture of the screwed-up staircase we've got in this place. The view at right is directly down the handrail that goes from the top floor of...
No! Duct-tape is not how we attach a dryer hose....
Somewhere during the recent move, Comcast neglected to move my account information along with the cable modem information to the new address—so earlier today, when they shut off service at the old place, our access went out. This cascaded a bunch of work for me like recloning the router's MAC...

The newspaper article clippet at right is something I scanned from one of the local papers here in Kirkland—but since I didn't scan the whole article (it's quite long), here's the short version: A playground was torched a while back (nobody was hurt) and local investigators figured out who was...
The job is, at this point, around 75% complete. Since we've been actually using the dresser for the last six months (or so), it's actually sustained some abuse—cat claws and oils have made their way into the soft and unprotected wood all over the place. Nearly all of the wood...

Furniture finishing 101

| | Comments (0)
I've titled this post Furniture finishing 101 because that's really what I'm in need of. This weekend, we're embarking on staining furniture. Wish us luck. So here's what's happened so far: about six months ago, Layla and I bought this absolutely awesome dresser from an unfinished furniture store in Redmond....

And...we're back!

The Comcast guy actually showed up largely on time, so we're back to shuffling these most wonderful bits across the information superether. I'll have more to discuss when I've actually got the office entirely set up. For now, I'm going to get some work done....

Internet imminent!

Well, we're almost completely moved. My legs feel like they're going to fall off. Apparantely, Layla's legs feel even worse. We ended up going non-stop from 6:30am to 7:30pm on Saturday, and then from 10am to 8pm or so on Sunday. With the exception of two hours (or so) where...
You can sortof see in the picture at right, but Aleph got into the fireplace at the new place while Layla and I were out shopping for ... well, food and cat things. We got the cats a water fountain (instead of the bowls—I'm pretty sure they hate stagnant water)...

The best mural...ever.

Layla and I found this on one of the garage walls when we first moved in. It's sortof difficult to see (you'll likely have to click the picture to really make it out—don't worry, I've sized it down a bit so it isn't huuuuge) which is probably why we didn't...

The moving begins

Over the next four weeks, Layla and I will be moving from our current (way tiny) apartment in Bellevue up to the veritable mansion/townhouse we've got rented up in Kirkland. Excitement shall surely ensue, although I'm not sure how much posting I'll be doing. For the immediate future, the site...
Layla and I were up in Kirkland today to get breakfast when I spotted this: I originally though this was some sort of old Noble or Mosler. It turns out Lee Noble has only been selling his own cars for the last seven years or so, but the Mosler guess...

Apartment shopping, pt. 3

Just an update: it looks like our applications were accepted, so Layla and I will be moving to Kirkland! Here's another picture of Layla's arm and the inside of the apartment—it's not the unit we'll be getting, but it's the same floor plan....

Sweet cars in Kirkland

| | Comments (2)
Layla and I spent a lot of time in Kirkland this weekend. Odds are good that in the future, we'll be spending even more there. While we were there, we spotted a few special cars. Of course, the usual handful of M3s (probably ... five or six, at least), one...

Apartment shopping, pt. 2

With some luck, our apartment search is largely over. We left an application and a deposit for a 2-bedroom, 2.5-bath unit (with a ... garage!) up in Kirkland. The place itself is, in my opinion, a real find—it's a really cool unit tucked in the back of a community up...

Layla and I spent all day looking for apartments...and I think we found one. It's up in Kirkland (hence the, err, image) but it's almost exactly what we were looking for—and it's got a garage. H o t. I'm still a bit tired from my night, so I'm going to...
